Basically, the idea is that if you win your rank goes up and if you lose it goes down. If you beat someone who is ranked higher than you then your rank will go up more than if you win against someone who is ranked lower than you. The amount that you win by does not affect your rank change.
What matters is how well ranked your opponent is.
Rankings are only affected by games that you play against random opponents. This is necessary in order to make the rankings system work.
